Installed Aux Transmission Cooler WITH Adaptive Cruise Control

Recommended Posts

Hi, ya'll. Longtime lurker here. Have a 2011 SHO w/ ACC. I tow a small trailer, and I've been following BPD's Auxiliary Trans Cooler thread since the beginning. I was frustrated that it wasn't available for us guys with ACC, and decided to tackle it myself.

OK, so this diagram shows the oem installation of the auxiliary trans cooler:

It uses two 'T' splitters in the hoses to split the fluid to both the primary cooler and the aux cooler, then to merge the fluid before returning to the trans. It's primarily these 'T' splitters and associated hoses that occupy the same space as the ACC Radar.

Anyone who's installed an aftermarket cooler knows that this is an unnecessarily complicated way to plumb an aux cooler. I just rerouted the output line from the Primary Cooler to the input on the Aux Cooler, then spliced the output on the Aux cooler into the Return Line on the Trans.

Transmission Output -> Primary Cooler -> Aux Cooler -> Transmission Return

I didn't bother replacing the bypass valve, or buying any of the other oem parts beside the cooler.

The bracket that comes with the cooler interferes with the bracket that holds the ACC. I just cut the extra crap off the cooler bracket and bolted it to the ACC bracket. There's about 1" of space between the Cooler bracket and the ACC bracket. I just filled it with some washers I had laying around.

Put the bumper cover back on today, topped off the fluid, and took it for a spin to check for leaks. Now I can tow with confidence!

Fantastic!

I'm sure many of your fellow owners (who HAVE the ACC option) will be absolutely ELATED that you were able to pull this off successfully! :thumb:

When time permits, I will be placing this amongst the "How-To" sticky's, so that you can live on in EBOF infamy.

Acceptable?

Also, i'll be sending some well deserved reputation points your way, and I would hope that other readers of this thread will do the same for you as well.

I don't have a trans temp gauge, so I'm just going to have to trust that it's working. I'll also have to trust that the bypass valve will keep the fluid from getting too COOL. I'll keep my eye on the levels and idiot lights, and check my fluid again after my next trip with the trailer. Maybe if Crash still has some gauge pods left I might hook something up this summer.

Myself, I can't go without the ACC. It's an option I never would have paid for if I ordered the car new, but the previous owner had already checked all the boxes. Now that I've had it for over a year, with over 22k miles, mostly long trips cross country, I'm hooked.

Plenty of pods left, and mold is still in good enough shape if I have to run another batch.

Don't blame ya for not wanting to do without the ACC, I sure miss mine.

My problem was when I did the 2013 cooler, I had a very small window time wise to do. I've have time over the winter but haven't been motivated enough to get out in the cold to do.

I had slight different approach to figuring out a work around. But I knew it could be done one way or another.

New bracket for the ACC ordered. Skookum could you elaborate on materials used, such hose type and size and approximate amount needed, hose barbs etc?

Great write up.

So my question is why do us 2013 guys who have PP don't have ACC and collision warning? We have the auxilary cooler, just NO ACC and NO COLLISION WARNING! Any ideas here why? I feel that it is easier to add on the aux trans cooler, which I have added on to my Marauder and my G8 GT that got traded in for this car than to try to add on ACC.

Would you guys agree?

I would agree, but I do know that you can't order both PP and ACC from Ford...

I am really happy that this got figured out, this is something that I want to add to my car, now it's just finding the time to do it! Great job and thanks for posting how you did it!

I hear want you getting at, I am sure ford could engineer to have both options. But the reason you can't have ACC on a PP car is because auxiliary trans cooler.

And the ACC is still not a option on PP cars.

There really no good answers as to why not, but there plenty of those still with our cars and every other car out there.

Not sure how expensive a option the ACC is, I know the radar sensor it's self is $1500, so if the ACC package is a $2000 or a $2500 option plus the PP option which believe over 2gs.

So beside engineering hurdles which would be minor, the price point of the car into the 50k range would probably turn off a lot of folks.

Just my guess any how.

I'm sure that instead of trying to engineer a setup that allows both, ford looked at what type of buyer would want ACC and PP. They may have figured that someone who wants the PP is more of a driver and likes to be in more control of the car and wants performance over comfort. The person wanting ACC is someone that does more highway driving, wants a more comfortable overall experience and doesn't push the car as often. I'm also sure packaging was easier not having both in the same place.

Chris, just to show cost, the ACC on the 13's list price is: $1.195.00 and I just checked my window sticker and that's the same price it was on the 10's. If I remember correctly the PP on the 10's was only $995.00 but on the 13's it is now: $1.995.00 but I believe there is a lot more included on the 13 Performance Package then there was on the earlier model PP. Had I been able to get the ACC and the PP I would have opted to have both in a minute. I understand that the price point would be a bit higher, but since the car has been out a few years and has built a good rep as far as performance and comfort goes, I believe that there are a fair amount of people who would opt for both options. I would be very happy if Ford would make it available and it would be one thing that could convince me to trade my car for a newer model.

I too wanted both and would have willingly paid for it. I flip-flopped back and forth between the two before settling on the ACC... I like it, but still wish I had the PP.

Thanks for doing this. So the only hose you unplugged was the bottom hose and ran hose to the aux cooler and to the top of the other cooler? Also can list exactly what hose and how long? Thanks !

Correct. I cut and removed the bottom hose and replaced with new hoses running thru the cooler. Any 1/2" rubber hose works. I bought 4ft and had a little extra left over. And you'll need a 1/2" brass barb hose splicer like this: http://www.amazon.com/Mender-Splicer-Fitting-Adapter-Coupler/dp/B007ZDNSJK
