Changed PTU fluid

Recommended Posts

I changed my PTU fluid this past weekend.

26,000 miles, It looked pretty bad. Replaced it with redline 75-w140.

Here's some pics.

I accessed the fill plug through the passenger side wheel well.

I used an impact driver with some 3/8" extension bars connected together

To remove/install the plug

PTU fluid at 26,000 miles. I was only able to remove about 13oz via oil extractor.

The cover plate must be pretty close to the gears. There was very little room to maneuver the siphon hose.

When I do this again, I'll do it from underneath the car. Seems to be enough access.

You can see the plug with the red thread sealant.

Here's a pic of the PTU part number.

Great right up and pictures!

I find myself fascinated by the PTU fluid ever since I learned of the darn thing. I'm very very curious now that people are changing the fluid in it that the next time the fluid is changed, it will be cleaner and less viscous than the first fluid change.

Could it just be the quality of the fluid Ford is using?

This also depends, I think on the quality of fluid people will use and how it holds up for another 25k-50k, whichever people choose to change it.

Just hope it isn't like my motorcycle rear end (shaft drive) where you add Moly Paste to the fluid (which makes it ridiculously dark and ugly) but helps immensely with the pressure on the gears. If we are washing it out that wouldn't be good obviously. Does the service manual say anything about changing the fluid in the PTU at all? I still plan on changing mine anyway...

This is an interesting idea you have and quite possibly why Ford is so against any fluid changes. I may be premature about my response until I look at exactly what Ford recommends for fluid in the PTU (as far as an additive in concerned).

I just heard that Motorcraft Synthetic fluid is one of the best synthetics available. Since I know very little about the various synthetics, maybe someone could enlighten us on them. I was planning on changing to Royal Purple but if Motorcraft is as good as I've just heard I would conider using it in the differential and PTU.
