EcoBrick Bob
We are heading on a 4,000 mile Christmas trip this Sat, and I just realized I need to change the oil (7K on it). Thought I had an extra Motorcraft 500S filter but can't find it. How big a deal is it to use a Mobil 1, K & N, Wix or other brand filter? Read something about flow thru pressure... Like it's supposed to be low so we get plenty of oil flow under load or WOT. Usually buy them from Rock Auto, but no time now. Or... should I Get RAPED buying it at my local Ford dealer? darreli
I only use K&N. The problem is they usually aren't on the autoparts store shelf. Mobil 1 makes a good filter too. The Mobil 1's use to not flow that great at startup because they filtered "so" well. I believe they fixed that. The K&N flows great and filters great
EcoBrick Bob
I called my local Ford store. Parts dept. put me on hold, and I hung up after 10 minutes. Ended up getting a TG Fram which is their best filter. Trying Castrol Full Synthetic Edge 5-20. More expensive that Mobil 1!. Hope it's as good. Running the same combo in my 08' G8 (but 5-30). I've done this personally on two separate occasions and was not happy with what I saw. Like Darrel, I also run K&N on all my vehicles and love them. They are pricey, usually $10-$12 a pop but they seem to be great quality. K&N combined with Pennzoil Platinum oil and I don't think I'll ever change to anything else. Chances are the Fram will be fine, I believe they are the largest supplier of racing oil filters in the world. Personal preference is all. Here is some good reading on oil filters.. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/reference.html
EcoBrick Bob
The Fram I got was $9. at Wal-mart - a Tough Guard one... My only fear is what Darrell was saying.... it might filter too well at startup an also under WOT runs. Stock filter has a bypass at around 8 psi I believe... Had several from Rock Auto, but didn't realize I was out.... or it is hiding some place...
mjhpadi
I won't use anything from K&N since my bad experience with them not standing behind their air filter when I had a seal failure. I have been using Mobil One Oil Filter's on all my vehicles for at least 8 years and never experienced any problem with them..I really like the Mobil One oil filters, and never seemed to see a low pressure problem with them. Crash712us
I'm going to have to dig around the web to find the article about oil filters again. It basically details every filter and who makes them. Many brands are often produce by one single manufacture, for instance puralator and motorcraft are the same filters. mjhpadi
I believe that the site you are talking about is Bob The Oil Guy site. It is now fairly old site and I believe a lot of the filters have been updated since his testing. Still it is very interesting.
bpd1151
I only use K&N. The problem is they usually aren't on the autoparts store shelf. I should count my lucky stars then that I live within 10min of the Joliet, IL Race Track as well as a myriad of Speed Shops that cater to enthusiats. I usually find the stuff I need on their shelves. Lucky me I guess :noidea:
mjhpadi
I'm very surprised that my local Autozone and Advance Auto Parts do not carry either the Mobil One or the K&N oil filters to fit our cars....I was kinda surprised because they usually have a well stocked filter section. I picked up the Motorcraft filter for ours at Advance for less than $8.00. They had a shelf full of them. I don't see any benefit in purchasing a different filter when the Motorcraft filters have been proven to work perfectly, are commonly available, and not excessive in cost. mjhpadi
As long as we are on the subject of oil filters: Anyone have any experience with Royal Purple filters or know anything about them?
Saucemaxx
I use Royal Purple and a Mobil 1 filter, I have not found any good reason to special order a k&n filter when Mobil 1 is on the shelf
EcoBrick Bob
Guess I should have gone to Advance Auto... and checked before on line. forgot about that option of checking before going. The Fram filters and most if not all of the others that fit, are not as long as the stock filter FL 500S.

mjhpadi
Shocked to find out that the only automotive place that stocks Royal Purple filters is Pep Boys...not stocked at AutoZone, Advance Auto, or any of the independent stores in my area. And the closest Pep Boys to me are 48 and 62 miles away. Makes me wonder why other places don't stock the RP filters. Less profit margin or problem with the filter....any ideas? mjhpadi
It looks like Summit may be the place to get Royal Purple oil filters, but I have been searching for info and input on these filters and have had a very little luck finding info on these filters or first hand experience from anyone that has used them. Colin, that is what I have been using (and Purolator Pure One on the Sable), but I am just trying to find out info on the Royal Purple...supposedly it is a really great filter, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who has firsthand knowledge or has used the filter to give any information. I don't believe that Royal Purple manufactures the filter, but I can't seem to get any info on who does manufacture it.
smokingozzy
I just recieved a E-mail back from Royal Purple saying that there oil filters are manufactured by Champion labratories in Illinois.
mjhpadi
Thanks, that's who I thought manufactured them, but I'm having a hen of a time finding anyplace in central Pennsylvania that stocks Royal Purple filters...I'm really shocked that they don't have better market penetration since the oil is fairly easy to find here.
