Upgrading the SHO

Recommended Posts

I have started working on her already....! I just took the wheels off to get them powder coated. I am plasti dipping the majority of the chrome on the vehicle. and since I have the wheels off I went ahead and painted the calipers. Next thing, which was put on order last week, is to install the mobsteel grille. I also have the SHO decal for the hood and need to put the tints on the rear and front lights. Here are some pics, enjoy :)

Cool man. Share some finished pics when ya get em. I know lots of others have plasti-dipped their cars, but in my experience, that stuff doesn't stay on so good, does it? And I think it will collect lint and cloth stuff when you wash and dry if you are not careful; its sticky. I guess if you use the right cloth maybe its no big deal.

I found a paint shop to do it. Wasn't easy. Nobody I went to wanted to touch that plastic chrome stuff. This place took the job and did ok. I say ok, cause it didn't come out like I wanted. There were a few runs and some spots where debris was caught in the paint, but from a short distance away it looks fantastic haha. The only piece that I'm having chipping issues with is the lower front grille chrome ring that they painted for me when I put the billet grille on. That silly chrome ring had to go, but the paint over that plastic chrome thing is chipping all to hell really fast. The front just takes a ton of abuse I guess.

This is true. Though the wife can't complain since I just landed a big job ;)

So I just finished with the plasti-dip and hate to say this.....but I am kind of surprised you guys recommend using it. It doesn't seem to adhere to the plastic at all. If you start to peel it off, it takes a hole strip with it. I went ahead and removed all of it and am going to do some more research on what kind of paint adheres to plastic better. I'm lucky that it comes off so easily. How does it seem to hold up for everyone else? I may have done something wrong, but I figured it was pretty straight forward.

Has anyone tried this out before?

I tried it and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I found and recommend "Dupli-Color" trim paint OEM flat black. I did my grill razor bars and my parking light bezels with this 9 months ago and the color and sheen were perfect. I've had no chipping either. I did clean as directed and prepped with a scotch pad as instructed but really not a bad job to undertake and the results are more permanent than the plasti-dip.

No I did not. I was trying to set the OEM flat black look and my guess was that a clear coat would add more shine and gloss. Not sure if I was right, but the end result is that I'm real pleased with the factory look my blacked out parts have.

I'm sure you can get the "Dupli-Color" at a local auto supply store. There is a web site for the company you could Google if you had to.

I have used a matte clear coat over flat paint before, and although it is a more dull finish than normal clear, it does indeed add some shine to the flat paint. In my experience if you want flat paint, be ready for it to not last as long as a shiny finish, cause you simply cant protect it the way you would like without diminishing the 'flat'.

So I just did a practice with the Krylon Plastic paint in a satin finish. I 220 gritted a very minimal amount to some chrome I had laying around. Let it dry for about 4 hours. I also did a seperate piece without 220 grit. The piece with the 220 grit adhered to it great! The piece that I didn't do any 220 grit did adhere to it nicely, but not as tight. Of course that is obvious, but they claim you don't need to prep the plastic/chrome. So it does adhere but I believe with a bit of 220 and this paint, it will last awhile. I am going to be re-taping the car and starting over with the krylon product.

I used this on my Jeep's faded plastic trim and it has held up to off-roading, washing, etc so far. I prepped the plastic by scuffing it up with heavy steel wool and wiping everything down with acetate before applying 3 light coats of paint.

Here's what it looks like after about two years (bumper caps)

Just about finished up all of the "paint mods." I think they turned out pretty good. About to get the head lights and tail lights tinted today.

Nice makes me feel very comfortable! I did three coats of it as well and added a few of clear. Should hold up nicely, at least I hope!
